Explore the extraordinary in the ordinary through the images of renowned photographer Gregory Crewdson. This exhibition presents five large-scale works from the Brooklyn- born photographer’s most recent series, Beneath the Roses.
Delicately balanced between daylight and twilight, Crewdson’s images blend everyday American life with cinematic scale thrillers. Influenced by films such as David Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Crewdson says his photographs examine “the American dream and its darker inverse”. He and his team of more than forty assistants create each scene either on a sound stage or on location, usually in the small town of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Meticulously planned, he creates each photograph from multiple shots. By digitally combining and editing in postproduction, he is able to achieve uniform focus throughout the image, giving the final piece an added dimension of reality.
In February, Crewdson spoke to a sold-out crowd at the Lightborne Lecture Series at the Cincinnati Art Museum. He has also been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, Aperture Magazine, and the New York Times.
